About Winfield

In 1996, Winfield, located in western Du Page County, celebrated its 75th anniversary of incorporation. This community is rich in history naming itself after Lt. General Winfield Scott, a celebrated Mexican-American War hero, who negotiated treaties with the Indian tribes that made this territory part of the United States. With the proximity to the Metra rail line, Winfield has easy access to downtown Chicago for business and pleasure. Winfield remains the safest community in DuPage County, according to recent crime statistics. It is a safe and healthy place to work and raise a family.

Home values have continued to increase over the years. In 1985, the average home value was $91,594. In the year 2000, the average home value was $200,285. Over 90% of Winfield residents are high school graduates and almost 1/2 are college graduates. The population of Winfield as well as the overall ethnic make-up of Winfield has remained stable over the years. The current population of Winfield is just under 7700.

Winfield is a designated Illinois Main Street community. As a Main Street community, Winfield’s goals include maintaining spirit, values and character. Winfield is committed to the development of the cultural, recreational and the commercial potential of all of the village but especially the downtown area. Promotional activities help increase awareness of downtown, bringing in customers for local business owners as well as raising awareness of the vitality of the town center.

Winfield recently built Village Green. The Village Green, located in the center of town, provides for a public gathering space. Winfield is the host to the Winfield Criterium, an annual professional bike race. Each August, the race attracts thousands of people to downtown Winfield. Every September, Winfield businesses sponsor Winfield’s Good Old Days. The weekend is filled with family-orientated activities. The proceeds help fund a college scholarship for a local student and assist in purchasing Christmas decorations for the village's downtown area.

Winfield boasts a wide array of support organizations. The Winfield Junior Woman’s Club offers a wide range of volunteering opportunities to support the community. This organization provides opportunities for education, personal development, and community services. Events, such as Good Old Days, a Halloween Party, Snacks with Santa, a garden walk, garage sale, and a Fashion and Tea Show help provide the revenue that is returned back to the community. The Winfield Library offers fiction, non-fiction, magazines, newspapers, videos, audio books, tapes, CDs, and reference materials for adults and juveniles. Others services, dedicated to Family Literacy, include public computers, public Internet workstations, a computer catalog, and large print books. It offers a quiet environment for students to study and learn. Summer Reading programs for children ages 2 to 14 are offered every year in June and July. A young adult/adult program is also offered. Teen Team is offered for young adults (7th grade and up) and is active during the summer.

Winfield's Police and Fire Departments also play integral roles in the community and school. The Winfield Police has sent DARE and VEGA officers to our 5th and 6th grade classrooms to discuss drug and gang awareness information. The Fire Department offers many community friendly activities that include visiting the fire station and educating citizens on their EDITH program that helps families develop plans for escape in their homes. Central DuPage Health offers educational opportunities for families in the areas of maintaining good health practices to proper safety related issues. Central DuPage Hospital's Behavioral Health Center offers counseling services to students and families who need assistance.

Winfield School District #34 is located near the downtown area. It houses students from preschool to 8th grade in two separate buildings on one campus. In 2002, Winfield schools added on a large addition to the existing middle school. This new/renovated building, called Winfield Central School, houses our 3rd-8th graders. Across the street from this building is the Primary school for preschool - 2nd graders. After graduating from Winfield Schools, our students attend West Chicago Community High School, District #94.
