Dear Winfield Families: Over the past month, our Middle School students have been participating in a group book study. In The Revealers by Doug Whilhelm portrays bullying from the middle school perspective. The teachers and I have led students in focused discussions related to their connections to this novel. I have enjoyed listening to and learning from the insights of our students. Students are developing a keener understanding of their role in the bullying that takes place around them. Gaining deeper insights into the role of bystanders and cyber-bullying in their lives have resulted in awareness we feel will make a positive impact on our students’ lives. If you would like to read The Revealers or have questions related to our bully prevention efforts, please contact me. Sincerely, Patti Palagi, Principal |

Dear Winfield Families: Over the past few months, I have made my way through the Rebecca Caudill nominated books. This list, unique to the state of Illinois, recognizes young adult novels. Dr. Hinrichs has sponsored lunch discussions around the nominated books leading up to students voting for their favorite selection. The selection is quite varied and I have enjoyed each one! For a complete list of this year’s nominations, go to www.rcyrba.org. or ask your 4-8 grader which their favorite selection was this year! You can also view the 2010 nominated books at this site to get a jump start on next years selections. “The first essential in any book is that it have something significant to say --a book that leaves the reader with bigger ideas than when he began reading - that stimulates his thinking, stretches his mind, deepens his feelings. A good book sticks to your ribs.” – Rebecca Caudill

Dear Winfield Families: This past Monday evening I attended the monthly PTO meeting. I am continually impressed and astounded by the work of this dedicated group. Looking around our buildings, I see their work on a daily basis. Over the course of this school year alone, approximately $6,000 of philanthropy requests have been granted to our staff. Our classrooms have upgraded technology and materials, our stage has beautiful performance quality curtains, and our Central gym has upgraded bleachers and score board all due to the efforts of this group. Your support of our PTO ensures that these efforts can continue. Put March 6 on your calendar for this Springs PTO event: Winfield Blues Fest. Invite your neighbors and friends; what a great way to highlight our fantastic school community!! Sincerely, Patti Palagi, Principal

Dear Winfield Families: Today marks the end of our second quarter in the Middle School. Sixth graders have mastered the hallways and getting to their classes on time and the eighth graders have met with the High School to start planning their Freshman year. Developing work habits and study skills are essential to academic success. A variety of structures and strategies are provided to students as no one method works for all. In addition staff members meet regularly to discuss student progress and problem solve solutions to both academic and social issues at every grade level. Parents are welcome to initiate a problem solving meeting. If you have concerns regarding any aspect of your child’s performance in school, do not hesitate to contact myself or Mrs. Van Ness. Sincerely, Patti Palagi, Principal

January 19, 2010 Dear Middle School Families: Over the past several months, students have been learning strategies to prevent and respond to bullying. The Bully Blockers program has resulted in increased knowledge and understanding of ways to curb many types of negative behaviors. The staff and I have been proud of the discussions and work of our Middle School students. With the start of the New Year, Middle Schoolers will be presented with another unique learning experience. To further support the skills taught in Bully Blockers and make deeper connections, Middle School students will be reading The Revealers by Doug Wilhelm. The staff and I as well as several parents and School Board members have read the book. This book connects with the occurrence of bullying in a Middle School setting and describes what changes can occur when students unite and refuse to accept the “status quo.” I have had great e-mail conversations with Mr. Wilhelm and area school personnel regarding the book. Many schools, libraries and other youth organizations have used this book to spark discussion and promote awareness and change regarding bullying. The Revealers was written for Middle School aged children. The story takes place in a Middle School and the situations are real to the students in Winfield. As with most Young Adult fiction, there are language choices that may be viewed as inappropriate. In the words of Doug Wilhelm: Young adults are demanding readers. The second they think a novel is preaching at them or sugarcoating reality, most of them will put that book down. So a Young Adult novel that’s full of an author’s ideas about how people should act, instead of how they actually do, simply won’t do young readers much good. Students will be reading in Language Arts class and discussing The Revealers as part of their advisory. Reading assignments will be given weekly with discussions happening at the start of Advisory one day per week. The Middle School staff will work collectively to create focused discussion questions. It is our hope to begin the novel on January 25. If you have any questions or would like to read The Revealers yourself, please contact me. I look forward to sharing and discussing this novel with our students and community. Sincerely,
Patti Palagi |
