Mrs. Burt (Third Grade)

Welcome to our class website! On this website you will find important announcements, updates about what we are learning in class, pictures, videos, useful links, and more.  I hope that you take the time to explore all pages on the website and visit it often throughout the school year.  This website will help to keep you informed and connected to your child's education. I cannot wait to share all of the great things happening in third grade this year!

Meet Mrs. Burt!!

Hi, my name is Mrs. Burt and this is my third year teaching at Winfield Central.  I love teaching third grade and I am looking forward to another great year at Winfield.  I graduated from Western Illinois University and began my teaching career as a paraprofessional.  In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and dog (Baxter).  I also enjoy being outdoors, crafting, and cooking.  I love to read, and I hope you do too!  We will be reading a lot of great stories this year, and there are many great reading areas waiting for you in our classroom.

This summer I worked at a summer camp at the Campanelli YMCA in Schaumburg with Mrs. Nasiopulos.  We had a lot of fun playing games outside and going on field trips each week.  I spent the rest of my time with my family and friends.  A few of my favorite days included going to Disney World, visiting Milwaukee, and a family vacation to Wisconsin Dells.  I had a wonderful summer, but I can’t wait to meet all of you.  Third grade is an exciting year!  We will have a lot of fun and learn so many new and interesting things that you never knew before.  I am looking forward to a great year ahead!

What Will Your Child Learn in Third Grade This Year?

Our goal in third grade is to provide students with opportunities to collaborate with their peers and to grow as independent, self-directed learners.

ELA - During our literacy block each morning, we balance whole group instruction to introduce literacy skills along with small group and independent work during Daily 5 (read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, word work, and work on writing).

Word Work - Each week, students will be given a group of  words to study from Words Their Way to practice spelling rules and patterns.

Writing - Students will develop their skills as a writer with the 6+1 Writing Traits during Writer’s Workshop each week.  Students will respond to writing prompts and compose narrative, opinion, and informative pieces throughout the year.

Math - We use Sadlier Oxford’s Common Core Progress workbook as the basis of our curriculum.  Math instruction is delivered through a guided math framework where students will work on math skills in small groups and with partners along with independent practice.

Social Studies - In third grade social studies, the curriculum is based on the Illinois State Standards.  Our units of study include civics, geography, economics, and history with a focus on our community. Projects include the Biography Wax Museum and Market Day!
Science - We are currently using Mystery Science for the basis of our curricular instruction.
