Mr. Brach (Fourth Grade)

Welcome to Fourth Grade

Dear Parents,

Welcome to fourth grade!  My name is David Brach and I will be your child’s fourth grade teacher for the 2020-2021 school year.  This will be my 22st year of teaching in Winfield!  I have taught 3rd grade for 2 years, 1st  grade for 15 years, and 4th grade for 4 years.   I am looking forward to helping students learn study habits and organization, improve their critical thinking skills, and develop the ability to have deep discussion about a topic.  My main objective is to provide a stimulating learning environment that will encourage the students to explore and discover new concepts and ideas.  This curriculum will be presented in a meaningful and relevant manner.  Already I have been planning new and exciting activities for fourth grade and I can’t wait to put them into action!  A majority of the work that we will do will be kept in the classroom to be used for future learning activities. Most of our work will be online via Google Classroom.  You are more than welcome to visit our classroom and view your child’s work at any time.

In order for our students to be in a safe and friendly learning environment the following classroom discipline plan will be in effect at all times and we will use the acronym HEROES to help us remember the classroom rules.

  1. Hand in your best work.
  2. Enter the room prepared to learn.
  3. Raise your hand to speak/leave seat.
  4. Obey rules and follow directions quickly.
  5. Exit the room leaving your area clean.
  6. Show respect to adults and peers.

Students who behave appropriately will be positively rewarded with praise and class rewards, free time, and special privileges.  I will have already discussed this plan with your child but I would appreciate it if you would review the plan with them.  It is in your child’s best interest that we work together to help your child grow academically, emotionally, and socially.  I will always keep you informed about your child’s progress in class.

We will be using a classroom app called “Seesaw” for communication.  Please make sure to fill out the “Parent Questionnaire” so that I can get your email address and add you to your child’s Seesaw account.  This will allow you to keep track of your child’s progress anytime during the school day from work or home and be notified about classroom news/events! This will be exciting because your child will be posting what he/she is doing in the classroom throughout the day for you to view and enjoy!   All you have to do is supply me with your email address and I can then send you the link to download the app and become an active part of your child’s behavior plan and school day.

Your child will have an Assignment Notebook that he/she must bring back and forth to school every day.  The student will be responsible for writing down his/her assignments and he/she will also be held accountable for turning in their homework assignments when they are due.   I ask that you please review your child’s assignment notebook nightly so that I know you are aware of what your child has for homework.  It is very important that you know that I will give the students time in class to work on their homework assignments and have them complete the assignments at home if they need more time.   All students will have a designated time during the school day to write down their homework assignments in their assignment notebooks with teacher modeling.  I ask that you do not help your child with his/her homework assignments as I want to see how well the students are mastering the material taught in class. I also ask that you please go through your child’s Take Home Folder weekly and empty out any returned papers or notices.

I will allow  time during the day for a healthy snack and your child will be allowed to bring a water bottle to school.  A great idea for healthy snack would be fruit, vegetables, yogurt, granola bar, pretzels, etc.  Please make sure the water bottle only contains water and it is not distracting or takes up too much space.  Also note that this fourth grade class will be peanut free due to allergies.

I welcome you to contact me anytime with questions, comments, and concerns about your child’s social, emotional, and academic development.  I can be reached through email at  or through the class Seesaw App.  I ask that you please send your questions or comments by 6:00 pm so that I can respond promptly or I will contact you sometime the following school day and respond to your questions or concerns.   I ask that you please follow me on Twitter as I do post classroom learning activities and school events daily on my Twitter feed Mr Brach @mrbrach.  My Twitter feed is  a fantastic tool to follow to see what your child is doing in the classroom daily!
