Mrs. Hennessey (Fifth Grade)
Hello, 5th grade students and families! My name is Sarah Hennessey. This is my first year as a Winfield Tiger teacher! Prior to Winfield, I spent 4 years as a teacher in Chicago. I am excited to share my love of reading and history with you. When I am not teaching, I love trying new recipes, spending time outside with my family, and exercising. I have two beautiful sons and a spunky golden retriever dog named Marvin (Bubba for short)!
What will your student learn in 5th grade?
In 5th grade, our goal is to foster a love of learning while simultaneously focusing on problem solving, independent functioning, communication skills, and empathy.
Literacy - Literacy instruction is balanced through whole group instruction, small groups, and independent work. Reading strategies, word study, vocabulary and writing are incorporated into our daily literacy instruction. This instruction is developed using resources such as Benchmark Advanced and Scholastic News. We also conduct novel studies with novels designed to target social and emotional topics relevant to 5th graders.
Math - Math instruction is delivered through a guided math framework using the Big Ideas Math program to meet The Common Core State Standards for Math. Instruction is delivered through whole group, small group / partner work, and independent work.
Social Studies - In fifth grade social studies, the curriculum is based on the Illinois State Standards. We spend a lot of our year focused on history, covering the following: Land and First People, the Age of Exploration, the English Colonies, the American Revolution, and the Industrial Revolution. We will also cover current events.
Science - We are currently using Mystery Science for the basis of our curricular instruction. We cover topics such as matter, ecosystems, weather, and earth systems. We will do different challenges throughout the year to prepare our students for future S.T.E.M. careers!
