Mrs. Nasiopulos' (Third Grade)

A Little About Me...

Hello! My name is Sonja Nasiopulos.  I really enjoy teaching third grade and I am excited to begin another year at Winfield. I graduated from Valparaiso University in 2011 and began my teaching career as a paraprofessional in Winfield in the fall of 2011.  I then taught kindergarten in Benjamin School District 25 before returning to Winfield to teach third grade.  When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and pets.  I have two cats named Larry and Lucy.  I love outdoor activities, cooking, and watching sporting events (Go Cubs!).

I am looking forward to a great year ahead!

What will your child learn in third grade this year?

Our goal in third grade is to provide students with opportunities to collaborate with their peers and to grow as independent, self-directed learners.

ELA - During our literacy block each morning, we balance whole group instruction to introduce literacy skills along with small group and independent work during Daily 5 (read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, word work, and work on writing).

Word Work - Each week, students will be given a group of  words to study from Words Their Way to practice spelling rules and patterns.

Writing - Students will develop their skills as a writer with the 6+1 Writing Traits during Writer’s Workshop each week.  Students will respond to writing prompts and compose narrative, opinion, and informative pieces throughout the year.

Math -  Math instruction is delivered through a guided math framework to meet The Common Core State Standards for Math.  Students work through math workstations in small groups, with partners, and independently to build math skills and fluency.

Social Studies - In third grade social studies, the curriculum is based on the Illinois State Standards.  Our units of study include civics, geography, economics, and history with a focus on our community. Projects include the Biography Wax Museum and Market Day!
Science - We are currently using Mystery Science for the basis of our curricular instruction.

Daily Independent Practice

Each night, your child will typically have the following independent practice to complete at home:

  • Reading - Read 20 minutes and log the pages read in the assignment notebook.
  • Word Work - Words Their Way practice task - please see the spelling section under the Nasiopulos Core Subjects page for more information
  • Math - practice task (could be a practice page, fact practice, etc.)

All daily independent practice tasks will be written in your child's notebook everyday so please be sure to check it daily.
