MEET MRS. BURT!!
A LITTLE ABOUT ME…
Hello! My name is Amanda Burt. I really enjoy teaching third grade and I am excited to begin another year at Winfield. I graduated from Western Illinois University in 2012 and began my career here at Winfield as a paraprofessional in 2013. A few years later I joined the 3rd grade team in 2015. When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I have a dog named Baxter. I love cooking, making crafts, and traveling. I am looking forward to a great year ahead!
WHAT WILL YOUR CHILD LEARN IN THIRD GRADE THIS YEAR?
Our goal in third grade is to provide students with opportunities to collaborate with their peers and to grow as independent, self-directed learners.
Literacy - Literacy instruction is balanced through whole group instruction, small groups, and independent work. Reading strategies, word study, vocabulary and writing are incorporated into our daily literacy instruction. This instruction is developed using resources such as Benchmark Advanced and Scholastic News.
Math - Math instruction is delivered through a guided math framework using the Big Ideas Math program to meet The Common Core State Standards for Math. Students work through math workstations in small groups, with partners, and independently to build math skills and fluency.
Social Studies - In third grade social studies, the curriculum is based on the Illinois State Standards. Our units of study include civics, geography, economics, and history with a focus on our community. Projects include the Biography Wax Museum and Market Day!
Science - We are currently using Mystery Science for the basis of our curricular instruction.

DAILY INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Each night, your child will typically have the following independent practice to complete at home:
- Reading - Read 20 minutes and log the pages read in the assignment notebook.
- Word Work - Words Their Way practice task - please see the spelling section under the Nasiopulos Core Subjects page for more information
- Math - practice task (could be a practice page, fact practice, etc.)
All daily independent practice tasks will be written in your child's notebook everyday so please be sure to check it daily.
