Mrs. Nasiopulos' (Third Grade)
A LITTLE ABOUT ME…
Hello! My name is Sonja Nasiopulos. I really enjoy teaching third grade and I am excited to begin another year at Winfield. I graduated from Valparaiso University in 2011 and began my teaching career as a paraprofessional in Winfield in the fall of 2011. I then taught kindergarten in Benjamin School District 25 before returning to Winfield to teach third grade. When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and pets. I also love outdoor activities, cooking, and watching sporting events (Go Cubs!).
I am looking forward to a great year ahead!
WHAT WILL YOUR CHILD LEARN IN THIRD GRADE THIS YEAR?
Our goal in third grade is to provide students with opportunities to collaborate with their peers and to grow as independent, self-directed learners.
Literacy - Literacy instruction is balanced through whole group instruction, small groups, and independent work. Reading strategies, word study, vocabulary and writing are incorporated into our daily literacy instruction. This instruction is developed using resources such as Benchmark Advanced and Scholastic News.
Math - Math instruction is delivered through a guided math framework using the Big Ideas Math program to meet The Common Core State Standards for Math. Students work through math workstations in small groups, with partners, and independently to build math skills and fluency.
Social Studies - In third grade social studies, the curriculum is based on the Illinois State Standards. Our units of study include civics, geography, economics, and history with a focus on our community. Projects include the Biography Wax Museum and Market Day!
Science - We are currently using Mystery Science for the basis of our curricular instruction.
DAILY INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Each night we encourage the third graders to set a goal to read for 20 minutes. This reading can be done in a variety of ways including reading to self, listening to reading, or reading to someone.
For additional ideas of how to support your child at home, please check out the parent letters that are sent home at the beginning of each Benchmark unit and Big Ideas Math chapter.
